The department store, Maple and Co. based in Tottenham Court Road, London, sold contemporary and antique domestic furniture. The modern furniture was often made by local suppliers. This chair, with its reeded X-frame relates to a design illustrated in Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, London, 1807, pl. 22.
