Lot Essay

The triumphal-arched bedhead crowned by Venus's shell-badge supported by acanthus-wrapped and richly-fringed ribbon-scrolls relates to Louis Quatorze patterns issued in the late 17th Century by Daniel Marot (d. 1752) 'architect' to King William III in his Nouveaux Livre d'Appartements and his Second Livre d'Appartements. A late 17th Century bed, with a related head-board is now displayed in the King's Bed Chamber at The Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh (M. Swain, 'The State Beds at Holyroodhouse', Furniture History, pp. 58-60, pl. 64).
A related bed from Cullen House, Scotland was acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London in 1975.
