AN ASH WINDSOR ARMCHAIR

The shaped toprail and waisted back with solid splat, with incurved front arm-supports, above a shaped solid seat, on turned legs joined by stretchers, the underside inscribed in white paint '82/6154' and with plastic label 'OM 6154' restorations and replacements, one back leg, one stretcher, one front arm-support and the front edge of the seat replaced, previously painted and with the seat and back previously upholstered, the seat possibly beech or walnut

This early example of a Windsor armchair demonstrates an innovative design which is truly vernacular, made from cleft timber, shaped with a draw knife or adze. The indentation at the top of the front legs suggests that it previously had a frieze.
