Lot Essay

Items one and two: the complete inscription of these foundation bricks reads "Shalmaneser, the great king, strong king, king of the world, king of Assyria, son of Ashurnasirpal, the great king, strong king, king of the world, king of Assyria. Construction of the ziggurat at Kalhu". The ziggurat or temple building attached to the temple of the god Ninurta was the most prominent building in the city of Nimrud (Kalhu); its construction was completed by Shalmaneser III (reigned 858-824 B.C.). The outer face was built of baked bricks, like the ones above, each similarly inscribed.
