Lot Essay

The delicate form and finely carved details of this console with central female mask can be closely compared to a model designed by Jean-Bernard Toro circa 1716 (see C. de Salverte, Le Meuble Franais d'Aprs les Ornemanistes de 1600 1789, Paris, 1930, pl. IX.) Another related console derived from a design by Gilles-Marie Oppenord of circa 1725-1730 is illustrated in C. Packer, Paris Furniture by the Master bnistes, Newport, 1956, fig. 16.
