Abraham Nicolas Couleru, mitre in 1750 in Montbliard
Abraham Nicolas Couleru was one of the best known provincial bnistes of the mid-18th Century. Having apprenticed in the skills of the marqueteur in Paris, he returned to Montbliard and was patronized by duc Charles-Eugne de Wurtenberg. His work is characterized by elaborate marquetry and parquetry designs, often in intricate patterns, as on this bookcase. Examples of his work are in the Muse du Ville, Montbliard and the Muse des Arts Dcoratifs, Strasbourg.
