Third quarter 18th Century, possibly Wrzburg or Bamberg
The later moulded rectangular serpentine jasper top above a pierced scrolling acanthus frieze centred by a pierced assymmetrical cartouche, on cabriole legs carved with foliage and rockwork terminating in scrolled feet, restorations and regilt, previously but probably not originally with a wooden top
36½ in. (92.5 cm.) high; 58 in. (147 cm.) wide; 23 in. (58.5 cm.) deep

Lot Essay

This console table relates to a drawing for a console table by Johann Peter Wagner of Wrzburg in circa 1765 and as an executed version to a console table made at the same time for Schloss Pommersfelden by Georg Adam and Valentin Schall in Bamberg (H. Kreisel, Die Kunst des deutschen Möbels, Munich, 1970, figs. 536 and 544, respectively). A further related pair of tables executed in the nearby Mannheim, from the collection of th Margraves and Archdukes of Baden, Neues Schloss, Baden-Baden, were sold Sotheby's house sale, 5-6 October 1995, lot 98.
