A VENETIAN GILTWOOD MIRROR

The later rectangular plate within a moulded frame surmounted by a further cartouche-shaped plate engraved with two classical figures each holding an apple, within an elaborate pierced C-scroll and acanthus-carved frame, the apron with a further later oval-shaped plate, the gilding refreshed, restored breaks to the crest, the reverse variously inscribed '8'
68 in. x 48 in. (173 cm. x 122 cm.)

Lot Essay

This mirror relates to an example with a pastoral scene surmounting the main plate in the E. Gioberti Collection, Milan (S. Colombo, L'Arte del Mobile in Italia, Milan, 1975, plate 226), while a further very closely related mirror with Neptune to the small plate, formerly from the collection of the Rt. Hon. G.A.F. Cavendish-Bentinck, M.P., P.C. [+], was sold in these Rooms, 15 July 1891, lot 984, and again anonymously on the 2 May 1997, lot 135.
