Lot Essay

As with Old Acker Church (see lot 2), the present picture belongs to the very first group of paintings executed by Munch of the countryside surrounding Christiana. At the time, Northern European painting was still in the grip of Academic Naturalist painting and here Munch also shows the heavy influence of his compatriots Krohg, Thaulow and Werenskiold.

The Munch Museum has kindly confirmed the authenticity of this painting.
