Lot Essay

Kolo Moser and Editha Mautner-Markhof were married in 1905. The daughter of the Baron Mautner-Markhof, Editha had been the pupil of Moser until they were married. In 1906, she gave birth to their first son Karl of whom Moser painted this charming portrait a few years later.

At the turn of the century, Moser developed a luminous palette due to the influence of Karl Moll and his circle. Indeed, Moser adopted, the objective language of the Impressionists whose works he knew from exhibitions which he had organized with the Galerie Miethke in the first decade of the twentieth century.
