BUTô MEANING 'DANCE' (BU) AND 'STAMP ON THE GROUND' (Tô) WAS TRADITIONALLY A RITUAL DANCE, DANCED BY JAPANESE PEASANTS DURING THE HARVEST FESTIVAL. IN THE SIXTIES BUTô AROSE AS A REVOLUTIONARY MOVEMENT WHICH WAS A MIXTURE OF MODERN AND CLASSICAL JAPANESE DANCE. THE MOVEMENTS AND GESTURES ARE AN EXPRESSION OF BIRTH, LIFE AND DEATH, THE CENTRAL IDEAS AS INTERPRETED BY USHIO AMAGATSU, THE DIRECTOR OF THE GROUP.
ALEXANDRA PASZKOWSKA WAS FIRST INTRODUCED TO THE SANKAI JUKU BUTO DANCE GROUP AT THE MUNICH THEATRE FESTIVAL IN MAY 1982 WHERE SHE RECEIVED A SPONTANEOUS INVITATION TO PHOTOGRAPH THE DANCERS AT THE NEARBY 19TH CENTURY CASTLE NEUSCHWANSTEIN. PASZKOWSKA LATER MADE A SERIES OF COLOUR PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE DANCERS PERFORMING IMPROVISED MOVEMENTS ON THE BEACH AT BERWICK. IMAGES FROM THESE TWO SERIES HAVE BEEN PUBLISHED IN AMERICAN VOGUE, STERN MAGAZINE, SPIEGEL AND ANDY WARHOL'S INTERVIEW. HER WORK HAS BEEN EXHIBITED IN MUNICH, WASHINGTON, NEW YORK AND SAN FRANCISCO.
