Lot Essay

After having learned the daguerreotype process in New York City in 1846, Roderick M. Cole was reported to have traveled to various places including New York, Illinois, Vermont and Wisconsin. In 1850, he opened the first permanent gallery in Peoria, Illinois and was in business in that town until 1859 when he retired from photography and later moved to Santa Barbara, CA.
