Lot Essay

While on a commissioned project to illustrate Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass, Weston spent time photographing in New Orleans with Clarence John Laughlin. Laughlin considered this the "best" photograph Weston made in Louisiana. (Conger, n.p.) Weston included this image among the twelve chosen for the Fiftieth Anniversary Portfolio.
