Lot Essay

This study by Brancusi is of a stone head portrait of one of his favorite models, Rene Frachon, executed in 1909 and now lost. The credit and block letter signature in fountain pen on the verso along with printer's stamps and remnants of mechanical tape indicate that it was most likely the print Brancusi submitted for reproduction in This Quarter. Baroness R.F. was one of some 46 illustrations that accompanied the article Brancusi.
