Lot Essay

The elegant proportions and serpentine edge coupled with the superbly executed carvings of this table suggest the collaboration of a cabinetmaker with a specialized carver. The detailed basket of fruit in high relief centered on the front skirt complementing the leaf and star-punched carvings of the front legs are features associated with the Salem carver Samuel McIntire (1780-1819). For a table with the same form and similar carved basket attributed to McIntire, see Sack, The New Fine Points of Furniture (New York, 1993), p.292.
