TIRION, Isaak (?1705-1765). Het Verheerlykt Nederland of Kabinet van Hedendaagsche Gezigten. Amsterdam: Isaak Tirion, 1745-57; Amsterdam: bij de wed. Isaac Tirion, 1773-74.
9 parts [of 10?] in 2 volumes, 4° (approximately 195 x 159mm). Title-page of part one in red and black, 751 engraved views on 396 leaves, 57 double-page, the views include towns, villages, castles, country houses, churches, and town gates. Volume one (containing parts 1 to 5) 18th-century polished speckled calf, spine in six compartments, gilt in five, red morocco lettering-piece (old library label in upper compartment, extremtities rubbed), volume two (containing parts 6 to 9) early 19th-century sheep backed marbled-paper boards.
Het Verheerlykt Nederland was part of Tirion's project to describe and record the contemporary Netherlands, and although Tirion advertised the 300 plates he had used for Abraham Rademaker's Kabinet van Nederlandsche en Kleefsche Outheden en Gezigten as a collection which purchasers of Het Verheelykt Nederland might wish to add the latter work as supplementary material, the present work was seen very much as an independent enterprise. Tirion, originally from Utrecht, had moved to Amsterdam by May 1727 where he was first mentioned in the records of the booksellers guild. He met with considerable success, for in 1742 he was able to buy the former residence of Hendrik Wetstein, the well-known bookseller, on the Kalverstraat. Tirion remained at this address until his death, from which place some of his most important works were published including the present work and De tegenwoordige staat der Vereenigde Nederlanden (see the next lot). After Tirion's death in 1765 the publication of Het Verheerlykt Nederland was continued by his widow, who produced parts 7, 8, 9, and 10 between 1773 and 1774. Sold not subject to return. (2)
