Lot Essay

The stamp F*F, which appears on this commode en tombeau, was probably used by Franois Fleury, the younger brother of the better-known ébéniste Adrien Fleury. The latter was initially based in the Rue Traversière, but moved on to the Rue de Charonne and subsequently on to the Rue Saint-Hyacinthe. It is probable that Franois collaborated with his brother during the outset of his career but continued to work in the Rue Traversière after Adrien left, where he is mentioned until the beginning of the reign of LOuis XVI. The F*F stamp appears on a small group of Louis XV furniture, generally commodes, some of which are embellished with rich ormolu mounts. (P.
