Meiji period (1868-1912)
The two deities standing barefoot, dressed in long layered draperies and shawl partially exposing the chest and arms, serene downcast expression, urna, elongated ears, the high coiffure adorned by an elaborate metal-gilt tiara decorated with arabesque and flame motifs, long pendent ribbons and Buddhist jewels, repeated in the design of the necklace, traces of blue pigment (some loss and damage, minor restorations)

Lot Essay

With paper label bearing inscription 'Douane Paris Centrale'.

Daibontenno and Teishakutenno are originally Brahmanic deities, from before the arrival of the Buddha. They were incorporated within the Buddhist pantheon and often depicted as his attendants.
