The shaft composed of cylindrical segments of jasper and a variety of different forms of agate divided by brass rings, the head of agate with eight pronounced shaped flanges, each with simple chevron carving, the cornelian tip with spiral fluting, small chips, wadded slipcase in wooden case

A note sold with this lot states that this object is a sceptre of the ancient sovereigns of Hindostan and was taken at the battle of Sitabaldi and [a few years later] presented to Lord Amherst. The battle of Sitabaldi in the Central Provinces was fought between the British and the mahratta forces of the Peshwa Baji Rao in 1817, a year before the British finally managed to dethrone him. William Pitt, Earl Amherst of Arracan was Governor General in India from 1823-1828.
