The slightly curved double-edged watered steel blade with traces of a medial band of scrolling decoration at forte on each side, the waisted and faceted grips of highly figured walnut each set with three engraved gold rosettes and divided by a gold strap engraved, chased and pounced with panels of flowerheads divided by scrolling arabesques, slightly rubbed

Lot Essay

Daggers of this type were captured by the allies at the second battle of Vienna in 1683. Examples can be seen in the various Trkenbeute Collections such as Karlsruhe (Petrash, Ernst et al.: Die Karlsruher Turkenbeute, Munich, 1991, p.197ff.), and in the Armoury in Venice which contains simpler examples. The present example is unusual in that the strap is of gold.
