Of typical Mamluk form, the body painted with a series of quatrefoil cartouches each containing a single line of gold floriated kufic on gold ground, surrounded by spiralling white arabesques on gold spotted blue ground, the trumpet mouth with similar cartouches containing gold naskh on pink spotted ground, above minor band of gold kufic, foot similar, body with three applied ring handles, interior glazed plain white, intact, marked underfoot BFK 94

Lot Essay

The firm of Boch, which started in the early 19th century, is now better known as Villeroy and Boch and has had a particular reputation for stoneware. Together with a number of other high quality manufacturers in the second half of the 19th century they made a number of pieces such as the present example in the Islamic taste which was so fashionable at the time.
