Of tall rectangular form, the face carved with an eleven line inscription in strong kufic, the background lightly carved away and stippled, in plain surround

Lot Essay

The inscription reads:
In the name of God, the Almighty, the Compassionate
Allah himself is witness that there is no God but him.
And the angels and men of learning (too are witness). Maintaining his creation in justice, there in no God save Him, the Almighty, the Wise. (Qur'an sura III v.18)
There died Abi 'Abdallah m'Ali ibn Muhammad ..... four nights which have passed in Muharram.

This tombstone is comparable to others of his period date around the middle of the ninth century of which some are in the Museum of Islamic Art in Cairo (Hawary, H.: Catalogue général du musée arabe du Caire, Cairo, 1932).
