Lot Essay

John Carteret (1690-1763), son of George, 1st Baron Carteret and his wife, Lady Grace Granville, youngest daughter of John, 1st Earl of Bath. He succeeded his father's title when five years old and was educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford. In 1719 he was ambassador extraordinary to Sweden and in 1721 was appointed one of the two foreign secretaries under Walpole and in 1723 attended the congress of Cambrai. From 1730 to 1742, he led in the House of Lords the party opposed to Walpole and was with King George II at the battle of Dettingen.
