Lot Essay

The identification of the sitter is scratched in on the back of the frame.
Sir Thomas Hanmer (1677-1746), fourth Bt., was elected speaker of the House of Commons in 1714/1715. After Queen Anne's death, he took part in the opposition to the whig ministry and retired from parliament in 1727. He devoted the remainder of his life to gardening and literature, particularly his Shakespeare edition in six vols., of 1743/1744. In 1698, he married Isabella, dowager duchess of Grafton, and after her death in 1723, Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Folkes of Barton.
