The continuing popularity of the Safavid 'in and out palmette' design noted under lot 296 continued in India right through the 17th century; the carpet offered is an example of this design taken, with few modifications into the 18th century. It is however the magnificent powerful border which is the distinguishing feature of this carpet. For a similar concept of border design please see Gans-Ruedin, E.: Indian Carpets, London, 1984. p.125.
