Lot Essay

While the guls in this carpet are normal well-proportioned Dyrnak guls, what makes it remarkable is the border. The 'boats' within the side borders are filled with the 'C' motifs which appear in the field motifs of a small number of Yomut carpets. In his discussion of the group Hans Sienknecht notes none other which share this feature (Sienknecht, Hans: 'A Turkic Heritage, the Development of Ornament on Yomut C-Gl Carpets', HALI 47, October 1989, pp.30-39). One very similar example was however offered at Sotheby's New York, April 1982 (HALI vol.4, no.3, p.311).
