The ivory field with a fine overall design of horizontal bands of triangular flowerheads alternating with bands of similar square flowerheads around a shaded brown herati pole-medallion, the spandrels similar, in an indigo meandering polychrome flowering vine border between ivory floral meander and reciprocal arrowhead stripes, a broad plain shaded brown outer stripe with small inscription cartouche in one corner, a short kilim strip at each end

Lot Essay

The inscription cartouche reads 'Farmayesh-e (made to the order of) Muqarab Makhaqan Quli Khan 1308'. The date of 1308 most likely refers to the shamsha date introduced by Reza Shah Pahlavi and would therefore correspond to 1930, rather than 1890-1 which would be the lunar calendar equivalent in the Christian year
