The sleeping Christ child in the foreground is based on Cornelis Bos's engraving of Michelangelo's celebrated lost painting Leda and the Swan of 1529-30 (British Museum, London, Inv. no. 1878-7-13-161; Hollstein 54) The children's portraits in the lower right hand corner may be by another later hand.
