Lot Essay

For this multiple, Kienholz supplied Gemini with a completed prototype of Sawdy and the intention of producing 55 doors based on the number of colors available from a Datsun dealer who agreed to supply the original doors. There were 10 stock colors used and the interior colors all vary due to what was available. The screenprint used inside the window was from a photograph taken at night in Gemini's parking lot by the artist of his large sculpture Five Car Stud. Sawdy is considered to be integral to the history of multiple production at Gemini because of the collaborative advances that were taken in the manufacturing of this 3-dimensional work.
