Lot Essay

Given the fact that J.H. Weissenbruch travelled to Barbizon in the company of Victor Bauffe and Mrs Slagmulder in 1900, one can assume that the present lot portrays the latter. Mrs Slagmulder was the wife of the owner and director of Frans Buffa and was portrayed during their trip to France in the house of Barbizon-school painter J.F. Millet. (Christie's Amsterdam, 29 April 1998, lot 228 (illustrated)).
