Lot Essay

Tholen, a proficient watercolourist, often surpassed the masters of the Hague School. He worked and lived during the early years of his career in Kampen which, like Enkhuizen, is a town along the Zuiderzee (now the IJsselmeer). The present work is a strong example of his well chosen and unusual compositions. The Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen houses a work depicting a similar view Havengezicht met Drommedaris en Stadsherberg (Harbourscene with the Drommedaris and Town Inn) as well as another view of a Seventeenth Century house in Enkhuizen.
