Lot Essay

José Elbo, a painter from the Romantic era, was first and foremost a Genre painter. In his pictures his daring spirit, originality of execution and his patriotism combined the character of Goya and the fluency of Alenza.

When he was asked why he painted popular Genre scenes he answered "Because I am Spanish I do not meet many other compatriots but bullfighters and manolas" (typical girls from Madrid).
