Lot Essay

Near Burrows Cross, Guildford was painted in the environs of Leader's home, Burrows Cross House near Shere in Surrey, where he had taken up residence in 1889. The view is southward, depicting the Scot pines characteristic of the area. Kempsey Church on the Severn, with its Worcestershire subject, relates to two earlier compositions showing Kempsey, below Worcester, at the crossing point of the Pixham Ferry. Both these earlier works, painted in 1884 and 1889, were later engraved and published.
