Following in the tradition of the 18th Century Italian vedutisti, and, above all, the example of Pannini, in the present work Heinrich Hansen captures the interior of Saint Peter's bathed in the warm, southern light of the afternoon, thus creating sophisticated effects of chiaroscuro on the pillars and frescoes of the pendentives. In the distance, one can admire Raphael's Trasfigurazione of 1520, now housed in the Vatican Museums.
