Lot Essay

Cf: Alberto Shayo, op. cit., pp. 98-99, pl. 30-31i

'Dancer of Palmyra' was marketed in three sizes, the largest (26¾ in./68 cm.) solely in bronze. The present example, the middle size for the model but the largest edited in bronze and ivory, is extraordinary for the quality of the carving and the condition of the ivory. Due to the stress placed on the ivory from the torsion of the figure, it is rare to find a chryselephantine statuette in such good condition.
