The detail of a drawing here reproduced (courtesy of the RIBA Library, London) shows Godwin's sketches for metalwork on furniture at Dromore. The two upper right-hand sketches, for a lock plate and a handle, are titled in Godwin's hand Wardrobe Drawer.
Dromore Castle was commissioned in 1865 by William Hale James Charles Perry, 3rd Earl of Limerick. Godwin's scheme for the interior, which included furniture, fabrics, tiles, stained glass and sculpture, was begun in 1869 after the completion of the building itself. The final result was an eclectic mix of Japanese, Mediaeval, Gothic, Chinese and Celtic influences which reflected the tastes and preferences of both artist and patron.
Most of the furniture made by Watt for Dromore was in oak, but pine was also used, particularly for the bedroom furniture, as in the present piece. The wardrobe would appear to have been designed en suite with the dressing table offered in these rooms 16th February 1994, lot 38, and this is borne out by the drawing reproduced above which illustrates Godwin's design for the candle fittings on that piece.
