Lot Essay

The library steps originally formed part of the interior of the apartment of Jean Michel-Frank at 7, rue de Verneuil, Paris, created in 1929 in collaboration with Adolphe Chanaux, and can be seen in their original setting in the contemporary photograph reproduced below.
A set of two further variants of the steps were made for the Born residence in Buenos Aires, commissioned by Georges Born in 1935. These examples have an alternative construction with an 'X'-shaped cross stretcher supporting the back and one additional step.
