Lot Essay

Adrien Etienne Gaudez (d. 1902) studied under Jouffroy and began exhibiting at the Salon in 1864. The present, high quality group is a fine example from the series of Gaudez's sculptures which took as their subjects real or imaginary characters from the 16th and 17th centuries. Other titles in the series included Claude Lorraine and Nicholas Poussin, The Dance Lesson, The Upholsterer's Apprentice and The Armourer.
