Lot Essay

Filippo Pelagio Palagi (1775-1860) born in Bologna, first trained as a painter in the Academia Clementina. He moved to Rome in 1806 and worked as a decorative painter at Napoleon's apartment at the Quirinale, where he was undoubtably influenced by the designs of Percier and Fontaine. In 1832 the King of Sardinia commissioned him to completely refurbish the Palazzo Racconigi in Turin.

Gabrielle Capello (1807-1876) settled in Turin in 1825 where he collaborated with Palagi on his commission for the King of Sardinia and Capello produced all the furniture for the Palazzo Racconigi and assisted Pietro Piffetti with the Pregadio di Carlo Alberto at the Royal Palace.

A group of furniture, including these two lots, was sold at Sotheby's, London, 28 February 1997, lots 202-209.
