Although unsigned, the present marble and bronze relief may be attributed to Henry Spencer Pegram (d. 1937). Having studied at the West London School of Art, Pegram worked as assistant to Hamo Thornycroft from 1887-1891 and afterwards specialised in ideal work and for much of 1891-1892 worked on decorative sculpture for both the interior and exterior of the Imperial Institute. Influenced by the style and symbolism of Gilbert's work, the figure of St George depicted in this roundel relates closely to that of the latter, modelled as part of the Duke of Clarence tomb executed during the 1890s. In addition, comparisons may be drawn between the whole composition here and Gilbert's group of St George and the Dragon forming part of the Rosewater Ewer and Dish, presented to the Duke of York, circa 1901.
