The circular top inlaid to the centre with a roundel depicting St Peter's Square, with lapis border, surrounded by eight inlaid segmented panels each depicting a Roman or Florentine view, reading clockwise from top: Coloseum; Arch of Titus; The Tiber; Temple of Vesta; Forum; Pantheon; Campidoglio; Tomb of Cecilia Metella, with outer malachite and geometric micro-mosaic-inlaid border; on an associated mahogany base, with plain frieze and double column supports joined by an undertier, on splayed feet
