Lot Essay

The attribution is due to Dr. Hans-Ulrich Beck made on the basis of a photograph. He compares the composition and treatment of the trees and reeds with that in other paintings by the artist (see H.-U. Beck, Knstler um Jan van Goyen, IV, Doornspijk, 1991, pp. 229-230, nos. 613-615).

An attribution to Pieter Jansz. van Asch (Delft 1603-1678) is also to be considered, at the suggestion of Marijke C. de Kinkelder, of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie.
