Lot Essay

This portrait was one of a series of eight portraits of the sitter's family. The pair of portraits of the sitter's parents, Yves-Joseph Pommyer (1665-after 1739) and Marie-Marguerite Lefevre, was sold in these Rooms, 13 December 1996, lot 61, and five further portraits of the sitter's siblings, Franois, Yves-Joseph-Charles, Merry, Marie-Thèrese, Yves-Simon and Franois Emmanuel, were sold in these Rooms, 10 December 1993. Each picture bears an inscription and date on the relining canvas probably copied from the artist's own inscription.
The eight portraits existed as a group in 1928 when in the possession of Baron Alfred de Jacquier de Rosée. In that year five of the children's portraits were included in the Largillière exhibition, Palais des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris [Petit Palais], erroneously described as members of the d'Ormesson family. This confusion probably arose over the identity of the mother of the children; she was Marie-Marguerite Lefèvre who may formerly have been assumed to have been a member of the Lefèvre d'Ormesson family.

The present picture is to be included in Dr. Dominique Brême's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the works of Nicolas de Largillière.
