The reverse is applied with a circular piece of paper inscribed in sepia with the following: Plate of a Service made for H.R.H. the Duke of Clarence in 1792. Engraved in "Binns Century of ..tting"- In 1845 enquiries were made by Lord Augustus Fitzclarence when M<->r. Martin Barr (s)upplied the following description, "It was manufactured for His late Majesty when he was Duke of Clar(ence) and in the navy, about the year 1792. the design consis(ts) of a border of rich royal blue and gold and in the centre of ...... articles an emblamatical figure of Hope with an anchor was painted in a great variety of attitudes. This figure, (it is p)resumed was adopted in allusion to the noble profession His Royal Highness embraced in early life. The name of the artist who painted the whole of the figures in the service was John Pennington. It is said that His late Majesty William IV. was very pleased with this service and occasionally showed it to his friends when it was kept at Bushy Park. It is now in the possession of the Earl of Munster." From the collection of the late Right Hon. Viscount Torrington., and then dated July 11<->t<->h. 1884. in blue.
