Details
An oval moulded tazza of Palissy type
Late 16th Century
The centre moulded in relief with an interior scene with Christ's disciples at discussion and Christ washing St Peter's feet, the steep border with radiating gadroons terminating in foliage, the underside with mottled blue and brown glazes on a shallow oval foot (restoration to foliage and to border at 5 o'clock, slight flaking and grazing to glaze at centre, chipping to foot)
14 in. (35.5 cm.) wide
Provenance
The Duke of Hamilton (according to an inscribed label attached to the reverse)

Lot Essay

Two labels attached to the underside, one of which claims that the tazza is signed BP (or BB) on the last pillar right... As the tazza does not appear to be signed, it is impossible to establish if the labels are original to this or another similar tazza, or to establish the provenance with any certainty.
