A George III parcel-gilt trophy cup
maker's mark of Matthew Boulton, Birmingham, 1819
Vase-shaped and on detachable spreading circular foot chased with acanthus foliage and berried laurel border, the lower part of the body applied with acanthus foliage and with two bracket handles with bacchic mask terminals, applied beneath the egg-and-dart rim with trailing vines, one side applied with the scene of a horse race, the other with an inscription 'GOODWOOD 1891', marked on body and foot

Lot Essay

This cup would have been the prize for one of three races held at Goodwood in 1891; either the Steward's Cup, the Goodwood Cup or the Chesterfield Cup. It was most probably for the Goodwood Cup, run on the 30 July, and won by Mr. Grettin's Gonsalvo.
