Lot Essay

Many tribute jades inlaid with precious jewels made by Mughal craftsmen were received by the Qing court and these were particularly appreciated by the Qianlong emperor who wrote poems in praise of its quality. It is, therefore, not surprising to find Mughal-style decoration on quality crystal, and particularly interesting to find a rich combination of rubies, emeralds and diamonds. Cf. a jade bowl with flower-petal of rubies, bearing a Qianlong Yuyong inscription, illustrated by Wan-go Weng and Yang Boda, Treasures of the Forbidden City, p. 303, no. 215 (two views).
