Lot Essay

Compare with a closely related box in The Cleveland Museum of Art, carved with a parrot medallion, illustrated by Mino and Tsang, Ice and Green Clouds, fig. 47. The authors report that the box was thought to have been found at one of the Yue ware kiln sites along the shores of Shanglinhu in Yuyaoxian in the 1930's. Boxes of this form are more comonly decorated with parrots and cranes, designs that appear to have been inspired by the chased ornament on Tang silver vessels.
