INCISED XUANDE SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD

Cast seated dhyanasana on a double-tiered lotus throne, both hands held in karana, wearing elaborate jewellery, the hair partially tied in a top knot with two strands falling on each shoulders and crowned by a tiara, the nianhao incised as a horizontal line at the front of the base (losses to crown, nose restored)

Lot Essay

In Tibet, Syamatara (the Green Tara) or Shengjiudufomu, is known as the protector of women and children, whereas in China she is often associated with Guanyin and worshipped by people who wanted to attain their wishes. Two similar examples, one with a Yongle mark and the other dated to first half of 15th century, are included in the exhibition, The Path to Enlightenment, illustrated by Lutz, Catalogue, nos. 93 and 94.
