Lot Essay

Georgiana, daughter of the 1st Earl Spencer, married in 1774 the 5th Duke of Devonshire. James Hare, was an intimate of the 5th Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. The inscription on the reverse is possibly from Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire's poem of five verses on his death which was published in the Gentleman's Magazine, 1804, part I, p. 552. If this portrait is posthumous, it was mostly likely commissioned by the 5th Duke or Duchess of Devonshire.
